London-based artist Damien Hirst’s publishing and design company Other Criteria, which Sinvin real estate director Margie Sarway represented along with Sinvin principal Christopher Owles in its new lease at 458 Broome Street, is slated to open its first US store this Spring.
Other Criteria leased the 2,200 s/f ground floor and 2,100 s/f basement space between Greene and Mercer Streets in SoHo on a long-term basis from landlord, Terra Broome Street LLC.
The space has 16-foot high ceilings and is being built to suit to emulate the design of Hirst’s three stores in the UK, located in London, Marylebone and Devon, England.
Co-founded by Hirst in 2005, with Hugh Allan and Frank Dunphy, along with creative directorship from Jason Beard, Other Criteria works directly with Hirst and a number of established and emerging artists to make limited edition objects, clothing, jewelry, photographic prints, posters, art prints and books.
Objects range in design and function, for example, from unique chairs to beach towels (featuring work by artists such as Mat Collishaw and Jasper Johns), and even kitch items like toilet paper printed with self-portraiture by artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster.
“Other Criteria is the only store of its kind in the UK and the whole creative team is excited to bring their vision to New York City,” said Sarway.
“This location fits the company’s brand precisely with such a rich mix of art and retail on Broome Street.”
The landlord was represented in the transaction by Jane McVerry of Atria Properties. The reported asking rent was $250 per ground floor square foot.
