Second Eatery for Galanga’s Owner

By Adrianne Pasquarelli | November 24, 2008

The owner of the West Village Thai restaurant is opening a spot in West Chelsea.

A new cuisine option will soon arrive in West Chelsea. Tuppea Inc., owner of popular West Village Thai restaurant Galanga, signed a 10-year lease for 1,500 square feet at 136 Ninth Ave., between West 18th and West 19th streets. The asking rent for the space, which includes a storage basement, was $120 a square foot.

Whether the new restaurant turns out to be a second Galanga or operates under a different name, it will never-theless be an asset to the neighborhood, according to STEVE RAPPAPORT, the Sinvin Realty broker who represented landlord 136 Ninth Ave. Corp.

“There aren’t a lot of great places to eat, but there are an awful lot of people who live [there],” he says. “It’s a blossoming, developing and very chic neighborhood.”

Opening in a space that formerly housed a dog-grooming business, Galanga’s second eatery will offer some takeout but will focus primarily on sit-down service.

Dan Tedlie, a broker with New York Commercial Realty Services, represented Tuppea Inc. in the transaction.
